GW6: New York picks

For GW6, we are looking at the two MLS Teams from New York, the new expansion team of New York City F.C. and the established side of New York Red Bulls. Both teams have shown some good early season form and both have good chances of making the MLS Cup play-offs.

This week though we are going to concentrate on a player from each side. For NYCFC, we will talk about David Villa and for Red Bulls, its Shaun’s brother, Bradley Wright Phillips.

David Villa has certainly hit the ground running with his NYCFC team-mates in the Manchester City’s franchise inaugural MLS season and it has had great impact on us MLS Fantasy managers. At $10.2, David Villa is a heavy hitter in the Fantasy MLS circles, but if your willing to stump up that kind of cash for a proven goal-scorer, Villa can bag you points, considering he has got 16 Fantasy points so far. Not to bad for a newcomer.

Picked by 25%+ of MLS Fantasy managers, David and NYCFC welcome Philadelphia Union to the Yankee’s Stadium this weekend. I’m predicting a 3-0 scoreline in favour of the home-side and a goal netted at least once by the Spaniard. This is before the play Philadelphia Union again, next week.

His striking counterpart at the City rivals club, New York Red Bulls, Bradley Wright Phillips is right up there with Villa so far this season. Coming in at the slightly pricier tag of $10.7, BWP has scored fifteen points for MLS Fantasy managers so far this season.

On April 11th the Red Bulls go away to D.C. United. Bradley will be looking to carry on his goal-scoring form for the Red Bulls, who will be looking to go one step further this season in the MLS Cup.

Which New York team, will come out on top?

Injuries and Suspensions : Hamstring is back!

Now there are good news? And bad news? The good news is there aren’t many injuries that could be fatal to your team. The bad news is both New York teams don’t play this week meaning no; BWP, Sam, Mix or Villa. Anyway moving on to the lack of injuries and suspensions there arent many but there are some…

Injuries and Suspenions : Are we safe?

For GW5 coming up it looks like there aren’t much injuries or suspenions to look like but there are some crucial ones that could affect your team and the next gameweeks, as after this round of fixtures it is the well known Double-Gamewwek (DGW). Anyway, onto this GW injuries and suspensions…

Round 5 Rankings

Round 4 presented fantasy players with some major roster problems. Several crucial players, included Mauro Diaz, Obafemi Martins, Axel Sjoberg, David Villa, and Chad Marshall, all were duds for MLSFM players last week due to unexpected injuries. On top of that, several teams were missing their stars due to international duties. For many players, Round 5 presents itself as a bounce back week for teams that weren’t able to field 11 starters. Will you #DareToOpara again, or will you find a different way to score some points for your team? Here are the Round 5 rankings:

Goalkeepers:

  1. Luis Marin ($5.6, vs Phi)
  2. Stefan Frei ($5.5, vs Hou)
  3. Clint Irwin ($5.1, vs NE)
  4. Donovan Ricketts ($5.3, vs DC)
  5. Adam Kwarasey ($5.4, vs Dal)
  6. David Bingham ($5.0, vs RSL)
  7. David Ousted ($5.5, vs LA)
  8. Sean Johnson ($5.4, vs Tor)
  9. Nick Rimando ($6.1, @ SJ)
  10. Chris Seitz ($5.1, @ Por)

Differential: Clint Irwin (3.6% owned). While the offense hasn’t necessarily produced for the Rapids, the defense has been rock solid. Colorado is the only team thus far to not concede a goal this year, and there is reason to believe the streak will continue against a New England team that has found goals hard to come by. Colorado probably has the best chance for a shutout this week, and Irwin is one of the few guaranteed starters for the fluctuating Rapids backline.

Buyer Beware: Chris Seitz (19.8% owned). The top scoring goalkeeper this year faces a tough task this round, when he plays a Portland team that are beginning to jell on offense. Portland-Dallas matchups have tended to be high scoring, averaging 3.4 goals per game, and it seems unlikely that Seitz will keep a shutout up against Darlington Nagbe, Fanendo Adi, and Rodney Wallace in the Rose City this Saturday.

Defenders:

  1. Ike Opara ($7.4, vs Phi)
  2. Matt Besler ($8.9, vs Phi)
  3. Liam Ridgewell ($8.4, vs Dal)
  4. Chad Marshall* ($8.6, vs Hou)
  5. Rafeal Ramos ($5.5, vs DC)
  6. Victor Bernandez ($7.1, vs RSL)
  7. Kendall Waston ($8.6, vs LA)
  8. Michael Harrington ($5.5, vs NE)
  9. Auerlian Collin ($7.9, vs DC)
  10. Omar Gonzalez ($9.2, @ Van)

*Pay close attention to Chad Marshall’s injury status. Despite his questionable tag, it was a large surprise that he wasn’t able to play last week vs Dallas. I would expect him to play this week, but follow the Sounders’ beat reporters on Twitter (@donruiztnt, @mattpentz, and @Mitch_Jason). By the end of the week, we should have a better idea of his status for this week.

Differential: Clarence Goodson (0.3% owned). Back from injury, Goodson has looked pretty solid in his first two games. Last week, he recorded three defensive bonus points, and two the game before. On top of that, he has been a factor offensively as well, recording an assist against Chicago and earning a penalty against New England.

Buyer Beware: Axel Sjoberg (36.8% owned). Sjoberg was a scratch last week with a foot injury, and there has been little reporting about it since. As of now, there is a lot of confusion whether or not he will play this week, or miss yet another game. Early indications are that he will potentially sit again. However, Colorado has a great chance of a shut out this week against New England, so if he does play, he should be in your lineup. Be sure to monitor the situation, this could potentially be a large risk/reward play for your fantasy team.

Midfielders:

  1. Kaka ($11.3, vs DC)
  2. Pedro Morales ($11.2, vs LA)
  3. Harry Shipp ($7.8, vs Tor)
  4. Benny Feilhaber ($9.2, vs Phi)
  5. Sebastian Giovinco ($11.0, @ Chi)
  6. Darlington Nagbe ($8.5, vs Dal)
  7. Lamar Neagle ($8.5, vs Hou)
  8. Pedro Ribeiro ($6.2, vs DC)
  9. Fabian Castillo ($9.8, @ Por)
  10. Javier Morales ($10.9, @ SJ)

Differential: Pedro Ribeiro (1.8% owned). Ribeiro is one of the few out of position players in MLSFM this year. Although he is listed as a midfielder, he has played the lone striker role in Orlando’s 4-5-1 formation. In the past couple of games, he has looked solid, pairing well will Kaka lately. Up against a DC team missing Steve Birnbaum and prone to giving up chances, Ribeiro has a good chance to put some points.

Buyer Beware: Kelyn Rowe (1.7% owned). Rowe scored thirteen points last round, but what’s concerning is the way he got there. He scored two goals against an average at best San Jose defense, but managed only one bonus point despite being an important player in the Revs’ offense. Goals are not necessarily Rowe’s forte, and if you take away the two he had, he would have an average of 3.25 points per game. His performance last week seems like an outlier; I would be hesitant to bring him in until he shows more consistency.

Forwards:

  1. Obafemi Martins ($11.2, vs Hou)
  2. Dom Dwyer ($10.3, vs Phi)
  3. Fanendo Adi ($9.3, vs Dal)
  4. Chris Wondolowski ($10.8, vs RSL)
  5. Octavio Rivero ($8.7, vs LA)
  6. Jozy Altidore ($9.6, @ Chi)
  7. Robbie Keane ($11.1, @ Van)
  8. Blas Perez ($9.3, @ Por)
  9. Innocent Emeghara ($9.0, vs RSL)
  10. Robbie Findley ($7.0, @ Chi)

Differential: Fanendo Adi (4.7% owned). Don’t look now, but one of the hottest strikers in MLS this season is none other than Timbers DP Fanendo Adi. The Nigerian front man has three goals in the past three games and has looked rather impressive so far this season. The Portland attack is beginning to come together with the reassurance of Darlington Nagbe playing in the number ten role. Adi should fair well in what should be a high scoring game against FC Dallas.

Buyer Beware: Fernando Aristiguieta (11.4% owned). The Philly offense has looked awfully flat in the two games after Christian Maidana’s injury. There just hasn’t been enough attacking creativity and shots on goal have been scarce. I wouldn’t trust Fernando Aristiguieta against the solid Sporting Kansas City defense at all.

GW5: Irish in the MLS

I’ve been toying with this piece for a while now and have decided, since Eire is Irish for Ireland, I decided that for my GW5 Preview article I was going to look at the Irish in MLS Fantasy.

Robbie Keane – LA Galaxy: $11.1

One of the Heavy Hitters in the MLS Fantasy game. He missed LA’s last game out and perhaps that’s why they were a bit off form and were defeated by D.C. United. This week, depending on jet-lag, Keane may not be back for the Galaxy’s trip “up North” to play Vancouver Whitecaps. With Zardes not on-form as of late, Robbie Keane may be called upon to deliver the goals and goods for the LA strike-force.

Question is though, is he is your team? or are you willing to stump up the cash and get the MLS League MVP for the last two seasons running into your team.

Sean St Ledger – Orlando City SC: $7.6

MarkThor-BkHackenExhibition-THOR0453

Never thought, I’d see the day that Sean St. Ledger would be on the same team as Brazilian legend, Kaka. But, he is and he is an Irish MLS player. I suppose from a MLS Fantasy point of view, he would be considered a Fantasy differential pick for your team. This is because, he would usually be a squad player and is subject to a rotation policy.

Orlando City are the Friday night game this week and they play host to D.C. United who stunned LA Galaxy last time out. St. Ledger could play in this one, with players like Ramos coming back from International duty.

Ryan Meara – New York City F.C.: $5.0

An Irish goalkeeper for the newly “born” New York franchise, that is under Manchester City ownership. He is the ultimate differential as he is the third choice keeper for NYCFC. Just because, he is Irish, I said that I would mention him.

*Reminder, Kevin Doyle is joining the Colorado Rapids on July 1st.*

Round 4 Highlights and Takeaways

NYCFC 0 – 1 Sporting KC

In this feisty, hotly contested match, one of the most notable takeaways was that Frank Lampard was at the game (though as a spectator) and David Villa was not. This contest was littered with scoring chances, and in the end the visitors spoiled NYCFC’s second ever home game.

Injuries and Suspensions : Crucial players out

With GW3 on the brink of kicking of, we saw a lot more goals going in. Like Seattle and San jose Earthquakes getting involved in a 5 goal thriller. Or La Galaxy not living up to their big MLS status with a 2-2 draw against Portland. However, there are vital players who may be out for GW3.

New-York-Red-Bulls-Roy-Miller-New-York-Cup-620x400 35082_ronald_zubar_1

3. Ronald Zubar and Roy Miller (NY Red Bulls) – With Zubar having a slight hamstring strain and Miller picking up an injury in training. The Bulls’ defence may be open and exposed, for DC United to take advantage of. As most of us Fantasy players know a hamstring strain isn’t an injury you can take a risk with. As taking a risk may leave Zubar from weeks out to months out.

RosalesReturns

2.Rosales (Vancouver) – Rosales is a vital part in the Vancouver attack and will be missed as he may miss the game against Orlando with a ankle sprain. As he may be out, you could look at other players in the Vancouver attack like Mattocks. However, if you do take this punt be prepared to take Mattocks straight back out again as Rosales may be back by GW4.

orlsoccer_rivas

1.Carlos Rivas (Orlando City) – Uh Oh. Main Striker Injured! Yes, Rivas is injured. With another player being cursed by these damn hamstring strains. As Orlando may be without Rivas for GW3, you may need to look somewhere else, as do Orlando. If you don’t have Kaka get him as he may be crucial to Orlando getting goals. Maybe Rochez can step up to the mark and produce a moment of magic, to maybe question if Adrian Heath is playing the right striker.

DONT FORGET : USMNT is due to be announced so some players may be getting loads of playing time in the national team and thus other players in the club squads may play.
